Thailand packing list: temples, beaches and city days

The ten-day Thailand itinerary uses three nights each in Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Krabi, with arrival and departure included in the ten days. That means two hotel changes and domestic travel as well as sightseeing. A bag you can repack easily is useful at every stop.

Confirm laundry at a base where you have enough time to collect and dry it before moving on. For this example, plan a wash around days four or five and another if your clothing needs it. Ask about turnaround before reducing your clothing quantities; warm-weather days may mean more frequent changes.

Check all booked baggage allowances, especially if your international and domestic flights use different airlines or fares. This list is an adaptable starting point, not a promise that every item fits within a cabin allowance. The carry-on packing guide explains how to check the finished bag.

These quantities include what you wear on the travel day and assume laundry during the trip. Pick pieces you already find comfortable. Choose a temple outfit that also works for dinner or a city walk so it earns its place in your bag.

If a formal dinner or a specific activity is booked, swap in what it needs. A mountain trek, diving course or motorcycle trip requires separate preparation; this city-and-beach checklist does not cover specialist equipment.

Bring an opaque top with sleeves and loose long trousers as a practical starting outfit. The Grand Palace’s official dress code excludes sleeveless and see-through tops, shorts, torn or tight trousers and mini skirts, among other items. Read the full list before visiting; a scarf over a beach outfit is not a substitute for meeting the site’s requirements.

Thailand’s official temple visitor guide also calls for respectful dress and removing shoes before entering designated buildings. Follow signs and staff instructions at each site. Choose walking footwear that is easy to take off and put back on when required.

Keep swimwear for swimming and use your cover-up when leaving the beach or pool. Pack clothing that is comfortable for the actual day, including walking, sitting and getting in and out of transport.

Bangkok, Chiang Mai and the southern coasts need separate weather checks. Use the Thai Meteorological Department’s forecasts and warnings for the regions you will visit. A broad seasonal label should not decide your beach day, boat outing or mountain clothing.

Rain protection for belongings does not make an outing suitable in poor weather. Keep a flexible day in the itinerary and follow local warnings and operator decisions. Put damp clothes in a separate bag for transfers, then take them out to dry when you arrive.

For the main travel bag, add your toiletries, chargers, suitable adapters and any personal medicines with the documentation required for your journey. Check entry and medicine-import requirements with the relevant authorities for your passport and circumstances. Keep essential personal items accessible to you.

Check the airline’s current rules for power banks before flying. The FAA’s battery guidance is a useful explanation of cabin carriage and short-circuit protection, but your operating airline’s capacity, quantity, storage and use restrictions may be stricter. Check domestic flights separately.

Before adding another pair of shoes, check whether you have a day that needs them. Before packing a large towel or hair dryer, ask your accommodation what it provides. Keep personal essentials, but challenge the extra outfit for an activity you have not planned.
